Rhythm is a key aspect of my music making. I love rhythm -- it sets me in motion, I resonate with it. Who did invent the rhythms we commonly use? Nature produces events that we experience as surprisingly complex rhythms. Cicadas, for instance, express rhythm with two very different mechanisms -- via an internal timbal organ (1) and by flicking their wings (2). Both can be heard in this piece. The latter one, I believe, is particularly surprising and intriguing...

I've found two interesting timelapse videos of cicadas! As they are Attribution 4.0, I've made a videoclip for my latest track, "cicadae", out of them. Credits are on the youtube page: youtu.be/C0iH26C4z-o


(1) "Cicadas have one of the best studied tymbals among insects. They possess a large tymbal plate that runs parallel to a series of vertical ribs surrounded by a springy pad of resilin. The tymbal is buckled due to muscular contraction resulting in a click, which is among the loudest sounds measured in insects (158 dB SPL) at their calling song frequency of 4.3 kHz" (Young and Bennet-Clark, 1995)

(2) "Female Magicicada cicadas do not sing, but they do make a sound by flicking their wings. These percussive wing flicks get the attention of male cicadas and it compels them to sing their court songs in response" (www.cicadamania.com/cicadas/magicicada-wing-flicks/)
